Goin' Places is the twelfth studio album by The Jacksons. It would be the last Jacksons' album released as a joint venture between Epic Records and Philadelphia International Records. Among the singles released from the album was the disco-hit "Different Kind of Lady" written by the group. Goin' Places peaked at No. 63 on the Billboard 200, and at No. 11 on the Billboard R&B albums chart and sold over half a million copies worldwide. A tour to promote the album ran from 22 January to 13 May 1978.
There's a Riot Goin' On is the fifth studio album by American funk and psychedelic soul band Sly and the Family Stone. It was recorded from 1970 to 1971 at Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, California and released later that year on November 20 by Epic Records. The album's recording was dominated by band frontman Sly Stone during a period of drug use and intra-group tension
The initial idea for What’s Going On came to Four Tops member Obie Benson when he was in San Francisco in 1969. They had the Haight-Ashbury then, all the kids up there with the long hair and everything, he told MOJO. The police was beating on the kids, but they wasn’t bothering anybody. He then brought it to Marvin Gaye, who loved it, saying it would be perfect for the Originals, a Motown vocal quartet he was producing. Benson disagreed, giving Marvin an ultimatum. I finally put it to him like this: ‘I’ll give you a percentage of the tune if you sing it, but if you do it on anybody else you can’t have none of i. Marvin agreed, then set about earning his writer’s percentage of the song. He definitely put the finishing touches on it, Benson said.
Get the story behind What's Going On, the lyrics, Marvin Gaye, and the cultural context of the song. Take a polished pop star who doubles as a popular sex symbol, mix him with a hot button social issue, a lot of marijuana, and what might be the best back-up band in music history, and you have Marvin Gaye's 1971 album, What's Going On. It would be like Beyoncé doing an anti-war single. Or like Justin Timberlake putting out a concept album about climate change. And if either of them ever attempts something like that, their success would be measured against Marvin Gaye's. That is to say, they'd have their work cut out for them.
What's Going On is not only Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, it's the most important and passionate record to come out of soul music, delivered by one of its finest voices, a man finally free to speak his mind and so move from R&B sex symbol to true recording artist.

What’s Happening Brother picks up from What’s Going On, strengthening its impact by making its situation more specific: a brother returning from Vietnam and trying to get his bearings on the block again, shifting between questions about old hang-outs and fears that there’s no work anywhere: Say man, I just don’t understand/What’s going on across this. Taking the album full circle, Inner City Blues blends back into What’s Going On, confirming itself nicely. One or two other cuts don’t hold together quite as well ( Right On, the longest number, misses) but the album as a whole takes precedence, absorbing its own flaws. There are very few performers who could carry a project like this off. I’ve always admired Marvin Gaye, but I didn’t expect that he would be one of them.
