A Nod's As Good As a Wink. to a Blind Horse was the third album by British rock group Faces, and their second album of 1971. Bolstered somewhat by lead singer Rod Stewart's recent solo success with "Maggie May", it was their most successful album worldwide, peaking at No. 6 in the US, and reaching No. 2 in the UK. It also contains their biggest US hit, the swaggering "Stay with Me" (No. 6 in the UK, No. 17 in the US), and the album itself would be certified gold by the RIAA in 1972.

When they entered the studio to record their third studio album, the Faces were really gathering momentum. Unfortunately for public perception of the band, their lead singer's solo career was taking off even faster. The group's second effort, Long Player, represented a major commercial leap when it arrived in stores in February 1971. A Top 40 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, it was nevertheless eclipsed by singer Rod Stewart's third solo record, Every Picture Tells a Story, which hit No. 1 in the . While public perception was increasingly focused on Stewart, the new album - titled A Nod Is As Good As a Wink. to a Blind Horse - presented the band at their creatively democratic best. Of the eight originals they lined up for the LP, the majority were co-written, with Lane, McLagan, Stewart and Wood all having a hand in the record's makeup.

A nod, you know, is as good as a wink to a blind horse. It seems intuitive to interpret the longer version as meaning 'neither a nod nor a wink has any purpose, both being equally pointless'. Nevertheless, the context of the early uses has it being used with the same apparent meaning as the short version, that is, 'you may nod or wink - I will take your meaning either way'. During the 19th century the expression began to be shortened and the blind horse was left at home.

Certainly, it didn't change the character of the album itself, which is the tightest record the band ever made. Granted that may be a relative term, since sloppiness is at the heart of the band, but this doesn't feel cobbled together (which the otherwise excellent Long Player did) and it serves up tremendous song after tremendous song, starting with the mean, propulsive "Miss Judy's Farm" and ending with the rampaging good times of "That's All You Need.
