Another German prog rock band from the mid to late '70s, this is their debut album. Basically another band in the ELOY, GROBSCHNITT, NOVALIS vein, and like those bands (save NOVALIS), RAMSES sung in English. One of my all time favourites is the album "La Leyla" (1976) from RAMSES, this is their best effort from the three records they released.

Album: La Leyla (1978). Down in the world, where the live is surrounded. with seductive enjoyments, are small hopes for you. All nice amusements keep your life now embraced, like the sound of La Leyla keeps your ears now caught. Now can't you see, you belong to La Leyla, you belong to her words, to her show. See what is wrong now and what's right, oh La Leyla, all your faces are visions with a deadly seal. Now you must die for the lie of La Leyla, and there're no golden voices for your dying soul

Hanover, Germany based RAMSES were formed in 1972 as RAMSES II. The next year was spent touring and performing original pieces and cover versions. This was also a period of several personnel changes. They recorded their first and most acclaimed album "LA LEYLA" in barely a week in Conny Plank's studio. It measured up to the contemporary works of ELOY, JANE and NOVALIS among others. Apart from the title track and "Someone Like You", the album included the anti Vietnam war piece "War", which was deemed too controversial in the US and replaced with "Noise" there, using the same melody and arrangement.

La Leyla" - this song begin with fantastic, 3 minutes guitar soloing (sounds like 2 electric guitars in the same time) based on rich keyboards (organ & Solina string ensemble) background. For young progheads which grew on technical prog-metal this album maybe has to slow & melancholic pace to interested, them but I hope they will also find this record intriguing. Full blown, highly melodic symphonic prog rock full of good guitar and vintage keyboards sounds! It can deserves only 5 starts.

According to the band homepage they had to re-write the lyrics for the song "War" because the US record company thought there was too much criticism of the Vietnam war in it. So the US-version came with the similar but different track "Noise".
