The album was co-produced by Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, and anyone familiar with that duo will immediately see why he was the ideal candidate for Lanza's immersive, often oblique brand of electronic pop. The two have known each other for years, and first worked together when Greenspan enlisted Lanza for backing vocals on 2011's It's All True. As noted in our Breaking Through feature, Greenspan was struck by Lanza's keen sense of musicality, and especially her knack for velveteen R&B melodies. Soon they were fleshing out her songs at his studio in Berlin. It's this combination of shadowy unknowability and full-hearted melody that makes Pull My Hair Back such an intriguing listen, and certainly one of the year's best debuts. Pull My Hair Back rings with a level of confidence surprising for a first record: Lanza experiments with bold minimalism, and frequently employs her voice to meet melodic and rhythmic ends in nontraditional ways.

Jessy Lanza is a Canadian electronic songwriter, producer, and vocalist from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She has released two albums, Pull My Hair Back (2013) and Oh No (2016), to critical praise on UK label Hyperdub. Jessy Lanza grew up playing piano and clarinet before going to Concordia University to study jazz. Before starting her career as a singer and music producer, she was a music teacher at school.

The pair's time together developed into a recording collaboration that resulted in Pull My Hair Back, Lanza's Hyperdub debut. Two months prior to its release, she appeared on labelmate Ikonika's "Beach Mode," in which she provided a wispy and melismatic but slightly cutting lead. That approach continues all the way through this brief, mostly subdued, sonically rich set.

If you were so inclined, you could treat ‘Pull My Hair Back’ as a side-project of genteel Canadian dance act Junior Boys: Jeremy Greenspan from that duo i. Of course, you’d be doing considerable disservice to Jessy Lanza, who brings her wistful, curiously distant vocals and encyclopedic knowledge of R&B to the party. The results elude easy categorisation, toying with the soft-focus synths and squealy ’80s funk chords that Greenspan has put to such good use in the past, but leaning towards minimal house pulsing and, on ‘5785021’, the tricksy drums of Chicago footwork.
