Rio Arriba is the sophomore album from ZZK artist Chancha Via Circuito who molds local South American rhythms into global artistry. Rio Arriba bubbles up from the Andes like percussive lava, seething as it is soothing. Chancha Via Circuito is a young Argentinian producer named Pedro Canale who makes music generally referred to as "digital cumbia"- a modern interpretation of a sound originally forged in Colombia when African slaves lived there during Spanish occupation. Rio Arriba is a dreamy, neo-primitive mix of chopped-up pan flutes, folk guitar, Coke-bottle percussion, and booming, electronically treated drums- an almost shamanistic sound that carries its own landscape: underbrush, riverbanks, campfires

On his 2011 sophomore album, Chancha melds local South American rhythms with contemporary production techniques, and borrows from global dance music sounds, then applies his own delicate sensibilities with gentle good humor.

Chancha Via Circuito is a moniker adopted by Argentine DJ Pedro Canale, who used to endure long commutes to gigs on a Buenos Aires train nicknamed La Chancha ("The Pig"). On his fascinating new album Río Arriba, which means "upriver," you can tell that he spent a lot of time sitting on La Chancha. The record is full of rusty beats that chug along with machine-like intensity, cutting across landscapes of South American cumbia, African rhythms and Andean chants.
