Neil Young's American Dream was the first track on the album. He was aided instrumentally by Stephen Stills playing keyboards.
18 years ago this week, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young released the first album they’d recorded as a foursome in 18 years. Recorded at Redwood Digital in Woodside, California, AMERICAN DREAM was an album that might never have happened if the aforementioned Mr. Crosby hadn’t managed to clean up his act and stop doing drugs, but Neil Young promised that if Crosby did so, then the world would finally once more be blessed with a reunion of CSN&Y. Crosby did, due in no. small part to serving a five-month prison stint, but how he managed it didn’t matter: Young proved.
Certainly, expectations were so high that the album seemed much worse than it really was, and in retrospect it seems a workmanlike effort simply lacking the spark that made this group so much more than the sum of its parts.
Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) is a vocal folk rock supergroup made up of American singer-songwriters David Crosby and Stephen Stills and English singer-songwriter Graham Nash. They are also known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, who was an occasional fourth member. They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on American music and culture.
