Inside the Taj Mahal. Inside the Taj Mahal is - to use a much overused term - a classic in the new age community. Indeed, in 2002, New Age Voice solicited input and compiled a list of the most influential 25 new age albums of all time. This masterpiece is right there at number 11. The perfect acoustics of the great hall (a 28-second echo with no breakup) intrigued Paul Horn, and he received permission to perform and record there. This glorious album is a processing marvel and the harbinger of many great performances to come. The marvel is that the echo is the only process

Inside is a 1968 album by jazz flautist Paul Horn, considered one of the earliest new-age music and world fusion records. The album was recorded inside the Taj Mahal on 25 April 1968, while Horn was with the Beatles in India, and released on the Epic Records label. It has sold over one million copies. The album has been reissued under the name Inside the Taj Mahal. Paul Horn – flute, composer and producer. Earl Barton and Larry Kurland – photographs. Unidentified sentry – chanting accompaniment.
Paul Horn (RIP) was faced with a challenge in following up his immensely successful "Inside" LP (flute improvisations inside the Taj Mahal, exploring the extraordinary 16-second echo). Later in his career Paul would duplicate this technique inside various cathedrals, pyramids and caves but for "Inside II" he wanted to explore something different. For side 1 of the LP he wanted to play live to various natural sounds: waves, forest sounds, rain, and children playing. Inside II" instantly became a watershed album on its release, and arguably launched the entire genres of New Age and ambient soundscape recordings which followed in the 1970s and 1980s. At the very least it displays Paul's unique vision of music as a part of nature rather than apart from nature. Now that he's passed away his legacy is all we have left of him - but it remains vast and hugely important thanks in no small measure to this very album.
