On a sequel to 2009’s covers collection Tribute To, the My Morning Jacket singer imbues a set of classics and standards with a distinctly contemporary melancholy. There is a distinctly Pierre Mendardish aspect to Jim James’ take on the cover album. When the My Morning Jacket singer elects to record a compilation of songs mostly from the 1960s and 1970s in 2017, what stands out, aside from his interpretive choices, is primarily the question of differing vantage

Back in 2009, Jim James released Tribute To, a heartfelt, organically produced EP of George Harrison covers. Tribute to 2 has no single artist focus - it's comprised of covers James' cut over several years in different studios. He starts off auspiciously with a spacy, soulful reading of Brian Wilson's "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times," that touches Isaac Hayes' mighty arranging skills.

The resulting album feels like a genuine, cohesive artistic statement, one that often improves upon its source material rather than just paying bland tribute. Maybe Jim James should be sad more often. Essential Tracks: I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times, Baby Don’t Go, and Lucky Man.

Jim James' second album of covers is 'Tribute to . From My Morning Jacket’s early days, frontman Jim James had a thing for vocal reverb. On his second solo covers set, it persists, and serves the project well – these classic songs feel like live broadcasts from distant memory, clouds in heaven, or an empty theater after everyone’s gone home. Of course, James’ gorgeous tenor lies at the heart of it. Brian Wilson’s I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times is handsomely ghostly; ditto the Orioles’ doo-wop gem Crying In The Chapel, distilled to a single lonely voice

Jim James has a long history with the cover version. With My Morning Jacket, the Louisville band with whom he’s made his name in the past 20 years, he performed more than 60 of them. Some ended up on albums and B-sides – a mournful guitar-and-voice version of Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds, an echo-laden acoustic reading of Elton John’s Rocket Man – while dozens more were performed live. Tribute To 2 is a richer and more complete collection than either. The two best songs on the album – and the pair that give the collection a narrative theme – are the opener, The Beach Boys’ I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, and the penultimate track, The World Is Falling Down, by the jazz singer Abbey Lincoln. Lincoln’s gospel-tinged original, from a 1990 album, is turned into a ghostly folk ballad, complete with wobbly digital manipulations.

It’s a beautiful tribute to Lincoln who was frequently likened to her hero Billie Holiday, she was a civil rights advocate and activist from the 1960s on. She famously sang.

REPORTED BY: Kingdom Leaks. It’s been two and a half years since My Morning Jacket released their last album, 2015’s excellent The Waterfall, and though its once-rumored sister album never materialized, frontman Jim James has kept pretty busy since. Aside from always being on the road with MMJ, there’s been the reissue of one of the band’s best LPs, 2003’s It Still Moves, as well as James’ politically-charged, spaced-out psych-soul solo record Eternally Even last year. Now, he’s back with another solo outing, a collection of covers called Tribute To 2. Submitted By James Nee. Source stereogum.
