Under the Milky Way" is a single by Australian alternative rock band The Church, released on 15 February 1988 and appears on their fifth studio album Starfish. The song was written by bass guitarist and lead vocalist Steve Kilbey and his then-girlfriend Karin Jansson of Curious (Yellow).

Tired of playing "Under The Milky Way" gigs, where fans would leave after the band played their big hit, The Church refused to perform the tune for awhile in the early 2000s. Sia recorded this for a Lincoln MKT commercial in 2009. Her version was released as a single in 2010 but failed to chart. It's also been covered by Jimmy Little, Rick Springfield, Grant Lee Phillips, Josh Pyke, and The Killers, among others. This was used in several TV shows, including Miami Vice ("Asian Cut," 1989), Cold Case ("Family," 2005), Prison Break ("Map 1213," 2006),.

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty, Sound of their breath fades with the light. I think about the loveless fascination, Under the milky way tonight. Under the milky way tonight. G.

Kilbey wrote Under the Milky Way with his then girlfriend, Swedish musician Karin Jansson. The couple, who went on to have talented twin daughters, were visiting Kilbey’s mother on the New South Wales central coast. After dinner, Kilbey snuck outside to dodge his washing-up duties and smoke a special musicians’ jazz cigarette. It was the Church’s manager who insisted it make the cut on their fifth album, the Los Angeles-recorded Starfish. And then Arista Records founder Clive Davis, who recognised a cash cow when he heard one, made it the album’s first single. The 90s saw the Church saddled with far greater problems than an attention-seeking hit single as girls, drugs and geography threatened to tear the band apart. Certainly economics played a part, but at some point in the mid-noughties, Kilbey made a sort of peace with his famous song.

It's an ideal record for casual fans, along with being a great introduction for the curious and neophytes.
