This is an overview of prostitution by region. Prostitution is illegal in the majority of African countries. HIV/AIDS infection rates are particularly high among African sex workers. Nevertheless, it is common, driven by the widespread poverty in many sub-Saharan African countries, and is one of the drivers for the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Is there something ethically wrong with exchanging sexual services for money? Many people frown upon it. Traditional, conservative moralists view it as a taboo, (some) feminist scholars think that it exemplifies and contributes to a culture of male domination, and even those in favour of liberalisation and decriminalisation tend to stigmatise (or look down upon) those involved in the sex trade. But should this be the case? Should prostitution attract moral censure? In this series of posts I want to address these questions. I do so by looking at Ole Martin Moen’s article Is Prostitution Harmful?, which appeared in the Journal of Medical Ethics in 2012. I will also look at some critiques of Moen which have appeared in the same journal. Moen’s article has a structure and style of argument that I find appealing.
Prostitution has existed in nearly every civilization on earth, stretching back throughout all of recorded human history. 18th Century BCE: The Code of Hammurabi Refers to Prostitution. The Code of Hammurabi was compiled at the start of the reign of the Babylonian king Hammurabi from 792 to 750 . It includes provisions to protect the inheritance rights of prostitutes. Except for widows, this was the only category of women who had no male providers. The Code reads in part: If a "devoted woman" or a prostitute to whom her father has given a dowry and a deed therefore.
The paradigm act of prostitution is a female performing sexual intercourse with a male, not her husband, in exchange for money. How, as is clear from Craig’s List, there are plenty of opportunities to purchase sex from males, too. Philosophically, the main issue is presumably the rightness or wrongness of acts of prostitution and the distinct question of whether prostitution should be illegal in some or all of its forms. On the former there seem to be four main positions, which of course overlap in various ways. First, there is what I’ll call the moralist position
The Causes of Prostitution One percent of American females work in the field of prostitution. There are many reasons why woman turn to this option. These causes and effects not only hurt the woman, but also hurt their close friends, family and other relatives. Poverty, Rape, and assault often lead woman to the world of prostitution. Poverty plays a big role in why woman sought prostitution. Most women sell themselves because of past experiences or family problems.
The Prostitution of Sexuality considers sexual exploitation a political condition and thus the foundation of women's subordination and the base from which discrimination against women is constructed and enacted. Sexual exploitation objectifies women by reducing them to sex; sex that incites violence against women and that reduces women to commodities for market exchange. Sexual exploitation is the foundation of women’s oppression socially normalized. This is a difficult and painful subject to study. I tried to back away from this painfulness when I wroteFemale Sexual Slavery.
During last four decades, prostitution became a topic which is actively discussed in anglophone moral philosophy. There is an intense discussion between those who think that this phenomenon should be normalized and those who view it as undesirable. Student Theses at HSE must be completed in accordance with the University Rules and regulations specified by each educational programme.
In reality, prostitution of women is a particularly lethal form of violence against women, and a violation of a woman's most basic human rights. It is rarely the media-approved version of prostitution, a sexy and highly-paid adventure where business is conducted at upscale bars and in hotel rooms; though some sex workers do have that experience, most do not. For the vast majority of prostituted women, prostitution is the experience of being hunted, dominated, harassed, assaulted and battered. Sadly, the majority of girls enter prostitution before they have reached the age of consent . Joe Vargas, MA Former Captain of the Anaheim Police Department "Vargas: Legalizing Prostitution Would Do Nothing to Curb Abuse, Degradation of Women," Behind the Badge OC Feb. 26, 2017. 6. Human Trafficking.
Reasons For Legalizing Prostitution. Victimless Crime: Prostitution is considered a victimless crime as long as the people involved are consenting adults and no one is hurt. Prostitution does not imply there is always a victim. Free Choice: Consenting adults should have freedom of choice as they see fit, as long it is does not restrict the freedoms of others. Free Sex is Legal: Having sex without a fee is legal, therefore charging for something that is not illegal should not make that something illegal.
