Stream: Jeff Lynne’s ELO’s new album Alone in the Universe). It’s fitting, then, that 2015 sees Lynne’s return as a rebranded Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne’s ELO. The first record to bear those three letters since 2001’s Zoom, Alone in the Universe stays within the sounds we know of the group - everything here is definitely a pop song - while using technological advances to replace the bleeps and bloops of yesteryear. Gone are the artificial beeps of Telephone or the dense orchestra of Livin’ Thing ; replacing them are layers of piano and subtle strings  . While some of it falls short of past greatness, the core of the album shows Lynne hasn’t lost his mad genius after more than a decade of silence. Alone in the Universe is some of the best (and most consistent) work he’s created, but it’s still set in an established path, missing the big hit to push it over.

What Lynne has here on this album is his most focused, best pop music in decades and Alone in the Universe rivals ELO's best albums. 1 of 1 users found this helpful. maybe when you're 67 you no longer want to follow a studio schedule dictated by being in a full band, but for the next (truly) ELO album, it sure would be nice! Thanks, Jeff!. xpand.

But Alone in the Universe, Jeff Lynne's new record under the name, doesn’t simply unearth that classic ELO sound like some ancient artifact. Instead, it gently updates those elements to 2015, and works best when contrasting downcast lyrics with the effervescence of the music. ELO has been largely dormant since they released their thirteenth album in 2001. And yet, their music continues to find new listeners, whether through compilations, car commercials, soundtrack placements, or G+ copies of Eldorado in used record bins. On one hand, the band ought to have aged about as well as Emerson Lake & Palmer or Styx, which is to say, not very well. ELO’s best albums- A New World Record and Discovery in particular-are prime examples of the excesses of the '70s, with all the pomp and studio wankery of the most ambitious prog rock imaginable.

Alone in the Universe isn't the first Jeff Lynne album of the 21st century, nor is it the first Electric Light Orchestra of the 21st century. That honor belongs to Zoom, a 2001 comeback that faded quickly into history books, its lack of success blamed in some quarters on Lynne's reluctance to tour

Jeff Lynne was the creative genius behind ELO which sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, had more than 20 Top 40 Hits across the . and received countless awards and accolades. At the time of ELO's formation, Lynne had said the goal was to create modern rock and pop songs. A goal that remains true some 30 years later with the creation of this new material. For the casual ELO fans out there, don’t expect Out of the Blue, Part 2 with Alone in the Universe. To my ear, this album is a solid mix of 1980s ELO with Traveling Wilburys. The songs, to me, have an ELO feel to them (as opposed to a Jeff Lynne solo album feel) with a healthy dose of influence from Jeff Lynne’s Traveling Wilburys bandmates. I would recommend this album to anyone looking for some short pop-rock songs and ballads with catchy melodies that only someone like Jeff Lynne could think up.

The Electric Light Orchestra is dead; long live Jeff Lynne’s ELO. As corporate re-brandings go, this won’t shake the City. Whether his form of properly meets with your approval will, of course, depend on your capacity to perceive virtue in the familiar and the sentimentally melancholic (and in brevity: Alone in the Universe clocks in at roughly 35 minutes’ duration). After all this time, Jeff Lynne certainly deserves the benefit of any doubt. Independent culture newsletter. The best in film, music, TV & radio straight to your inbox.
