Face the Truth is SM's third solo album and his first to hold the line against the work of Pavement and Silver Jews. The album fuses seamlessly three distinct strains of his songwriting, which have jostled clumsily and often collided head-on throughout his career: The lanky, hammed-up guitar rock and the warm-hued air of "sunset nostalgia" it abets are nothing new; but Malkmus' playful experimentation with electronic instrumentation is a more recent phenomenon .
As the frontman for Pavement, Stephen Malkmus acted casually, tossing off random asides as poetry and amusing himself while the band deconstructed behind him. As a solo act, he still amuses himself, first and foremost, but he’s also taken control of the arrangements. While the Jicks may be his touring band, in the studio, it’s Malkmus at the instruments and controls which leads to tighter arrangements. Guitars still meander around the melodies and abrupt keyboards and shadings emerge, but it’s with an allegiance towards supporting not tearing down the song.

Considering the seemingly plainspoken title of his third solo album, plus the extracurricular knowledge that the former Pavement leader has settled down and is a first-time father, it would be easy to assume that Face the Truth is where Stephen Malkmus finally turns into a self-conscious adult, ironing out the kinks in his music, tempering his humor, and starts making classic. rock records for Mojo readers
Studio album by Stephen Malkmus.
Stephen Malkmus will release Face the Truth, his third album since splitting with Pavement, on May 24th. The album was recorded in Malkmus’ Portland, Oregon, basement and mixed in a studio by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, the Shins). Face the Truth finds the singer going at it solo. sort of. I’m not really sure how to title it yet, he confesses when asked if this is a Stephen Malkmus album (like his self-titled 2001 debut) or a Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks album (like 2003’s Pig Lib). I wanted to go back to more of a bossy style: in my house and at my leisure.
Stephen Malkmus's second post-Pavement venture, 2003's Pig Lib was a bit of a snoozer, to be kind. As a devoted Pavement diehard, I did my best to convince myself that it was a great record, but to no avail at all. A third of the songs seemed to exist solely as vessels to showcase Malkmus's ever-increasing guitar wizardry, while another third were trite pop throwaways. But it was that other third - the good third - that presented the real problem. If Malkmus wasn't going to give us a stunner, I was hoping he'd deliver an absolute clunker
Malkmus is driven by the same mischievous spirit that fueled his first solo album, but where that record had a proudly impish, even silly, bent, Face the Truth has an air of mystery.
