The Dock of the Bay is the first of a number of posthumously released Otis Redding albums, and his seventh studio album. It contains a number of singles and B-sides dating back to 1965 and one of his best known songs, the posthumous hit "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". In 2003, the album was ranked number 161 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

It was never supposed to be like this: "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was supposed to mark the beginning of a new phase in Otis Redding's career, not an ending. Producer/guitarist Steve Cropper had a difficult task to perform in pulling together this album, the first of several posthumous releases issued by Stax/Volt in the wake of Redding's death. What could have been a cash-in effort or a grim memorial album instead became a vivid, exciting presentation of some key aspects of the talent that was lost when Redding died
The Beatles’ album got Redding thinking. He had always relied on the emotion and energy in his vocals to carry his songs, but now he started paying more mind to the words themselves; he’d also recorded most of his songs live in the studio, but the complex layering achieved by the Beatles and George Martin clued him in to other ways of building tracks. So, on Tuesday morning at 7:30 . he entered the studio, devoting the next 24 hours to finishing Dock of the Bay. One of the hardest things I ever had to do was mix that song, says Cropper. There was no time for background vocals but Cropper knew the song really needed something.
Otis Redding wrote the first verse of the song, under the abbreviated title "Dock of the Bay," on his promoter Bill Graham's rented houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California in August 1967. Many songs by Otis Redding were co-written was guitarist Steve Cropper. This song wasn't an exception. The song's two co-writers exchanged ideas while playing the song. Steve Cropper was at the studio when Otis Redding called his from the Memphis airport. After Redding's death, Cropper mixed the album at Stax Studios. He attached the sound of seagulls and sea waves, as Redding had demanded, recalling the sounds he heard when he was on the houseboat. According to Cropper, this mixing was one of the hardest things he ever had to d. .

Although three tracks were on previous Redding albums, the majority represent songs recorded in 1967, unreleased tracks made just before the subtle stylistic change of the title track. There are some quality ballads here, even after disregarding the awesome Nobody Knows You (one of those previously released tracks, in this case on The Soul Album. I Love You More Than Words Can Say stands out in particular. The Dock of the Bay sports a couple nice rockers as well. You know, it’s weird to say, but if you removed (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay from this album you might end up with a better album, simply running on the idea of albums being cohesive artistic statements. Content-wise, The Dock of the Bay would obviously be dramatically hurt if the track was missing. But it would sound a lot more direct.
