Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan & Idrees Sulieman.

The near 12-minute blues "Tommy's Tune" is the perfect vehicle for Burrell, a prelude for his classics of the same period "All Day Long" and "All Night Long. The lone trio session, on the standard "How Long Has This Been Going On?," is regarded as quintessential Flanagan, and quite indicative of the Midwestern Motor City flavor Flanagan and his many peers brought into the mainstream jazz of the day and beyond. One yearns for alternate takes of this session

While Flanagan, Coltane, Burrell and Sulieman were given equal billing on the album cover, the excellent 1957 session featured on this CD was actually lead by pianist Tommy Flanagan. He wrote all the original tunes and was featured in a trio setting on the Gershwin song "How Long Has This Been Going On?" My main reason for getting this album was the presence of Idrees Sulieman on trumpet. I consider him an outstanding and unfortunately under-rated trumpeter

Worla
DOL label, catalog number DOL778, has very clear and robust sound. Great alternative.
The Rollers of Vildar
Flanagan is clearly the true leader here. This was recorded at the time Coltrane left Miles Davis' group, a month before his official début as leader on Prestige, but like many other albums this wasn't released until '59 once he had left the label. Also, as four of the songs are the pianist Tommy Flanagan's creations, and as the horns all sit out on the one Standard, it's clear that Flanagan was the original leader, but that Prestige were cashing in on Coltrane's ever growing status. It's all decent quality, very nice, but not essential.
