Foster the People is an American indie pop band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2009. It currently consists of lead vocalist Mark Foster, lead guitarist Sean Cimino, keyboardist Isom Innis, and drummer Mark Pontius. Foster founded the band in 2009 after spending several years in Los Angeles as a struggling musician and working as a commercial jingle writer
Foster the People's 2011 full-length debut Torches expands upon the indie electronic outfit's '80s synth-meets-'60s psych pop sound. Buoyed by the online buzz surrounding the band's single "Pumped Up Kicks," Foster the People have crafted a batch of similarly catchy, electro-lite dance-pop that fits nicely next to such contemporaries as MGMT and Phoenix. To these ends you get the aforementioned anthem "Pumped Up Kicks," as well as the hypnotic disco hop track "Call It What You Want
Mark Foster sings on Foster the People 's first album, before adding defiantly, "Who cares?" Later, he punctuates "Call It What You Want" with the declaration, "What I got can't be bought. With just a few catchy singles and a reputation for energetic live shows, this . trio already sounds defensive and cagey, as if bristling from some imagined attack. Once you get past the genre paranoia, Torches actually has enough going for it that Foster the People could conceivably make those same points through their music rather than their lyrics. The songs dodge and weave stylistically, avoiding perceived critical jabs by scavenging pop history for new old sounds. Foster's falsetto alternately evokes Jamiroquai and Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue- surely the only overlap between those two performers- while his keyboards volley between early-90s radio dance pop and more recent MGMT doodles.
Album · 2011 · 11 Songs. Foster the People have touches of California sunbaked pop in their repertoire, but there’s also a dark Euro-disco groove lurking under the hooks of Don’t Stop (Color On the Walls) and the thick, goth-like wash of Waste. Singer Mark Foster plays and programs enough keyboards to give the songs a grand entrance, while other members contribute to the production to jazz up and space out tracks like Miss You and Life On the Nickel. Warrant works under an ambient haze.
Torches, the highly anticipated debut album by Foster The People, is the soundtrack for an eternal summer. Produced by Paul Epworth (Adele + Florence and the Machine), Rich Costey (Muse + Interpol), and Greg Kurstin (Beck + Red Hot Chili Peppers), Torches delivers on both the promise of their breakthrough chart-topping single Pumped Up Kicks and the promise of this young band out of Los Angeles. We just want people to feel better about their lives. The sound is universally uplifting combining influences from alternative's greats mixed with songs that make you dance. Fortunately, that's not the case with Torches. Also worth noting is that much like an & album, it clocks in at under 40 minutes, emphasizing quantity over quality. The big (huge) hit is "Pumped Up Kicks" and with its memorable lyric and hooks, it's easy to see why so many people love it.
