Everything but the Girl (sometimes referred to as EBTG) were an English musical duo, formed in Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt

Everything but the Girl. There have been no new recordings as Everything but the Girl since 1999. According to Thorn, the group is "currently mothballed". In 2012 Watt recalled a lacklustre feeling from the late 1990s, during the latter years of EBTG: Self-awareness is a dangerous thing: by about the third or fourth record, people were throwing comparisons at us and you have to be very tough to withstand it.

The music fad of the moment in 1984 in England was a revival of the early-'60s Brazilian pop sound of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Stan Getz, updated to current sensibilities, and the two main practitioners were Sade and Everything But the Girl. On this revised version of their . debut album, Eden, altered for . consumption, the duo of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt performed their three . chart singles, "Each and Every One," "Mine," and "Native Land," in a calm, unruffled style keyed to Thorn's warm, if slightly unfocused, vocal style. Still, Everything But the Girl was more direct and had less of the exotic affectation of Sade (which, however, may help explain why it was she, and not they, who succeeded in America).
