Hagar's Song, the newest release from longtime ECM luminary Charles Lloyd, is an interactive duo recording with Jason Moran, the star pianist who has been a key member of Lloyd's latter-day quartet. The centerpiece of the album is the title suite composed by Lloyd and dedicated to his her, who was taken from her home in south Mississippi at age 10 and sold to another slave-owner in Tennessee. Hagar’s Song is an interactive duo recording from saxophonist Charles Lloyd and Jason Moran, the pianist who has been a key member of Lloyd’s latter day quartet since 2007. The album features pieces especially dear to Lloyd, ranging from compositions by Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Earl Hines to a standard strongly associated with Billie Holiday (You’ve Changed), Brian Wilson’s most famous Beach Boys ballad (God Only Knows) and a Bob Dylan song definitively interpreted by The Band (I Shall Be Released), played in.

Moran and Lloyd recorded a duo album, Hagar's Song, in 2013 "Live: Time" is a 2008 complement to the Philadelphia Museum of Art exhibition on The Quilts of Gee's Bend. Cane was written for classical wind quintet Imani Winds - among them Moran's college classmate Toyin Spellman. It premiered in October 2008, and appeared in their album Terra Incognita in 2010; it relates to Marie Thérèse Metoyer. Saxophonist Charles Lloyd, soon to be 75, here gives an intimate closeup of his warm relationship with brilliant pianist Jason Moran – and with his enslaved her, who names the album through Lloyd's suite in her memory. Evergreens such as Ellington's Mood Indigo mingle with Dylan's I Shall Be Released and the Beach Boys' God Only Knows – the latter choice reflecting Lloyd's California sojourns with the Beach Boys in the 1970s.

Hagar’s Song is the best recording in Charles Lloyd’s career, going back to the 1960s. Yet it comes the year the flutist/saxophonist turned 75-years-old this March 15. But there’s still more to it.
