TAR114 Grey Aura - 1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking. 1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking’ is the first of two demos, leading up to our (as of yet untitled) sophomore full-length album. Conceptually, this demo starts off in Jerez de la Frontera, Andalucia. Fictional early 20th century Spanish/Dutch painter Pieter van der Laan (aka Pedro) lives with his parents and the Segovia family, who own a small wine company.

1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking’ deals with the first chapters of the novel. Pedro has just fled from his hometown of Jerez de la Frontera and meets a mysterious woman named Béatrice Charron, who takes him with her to Paris. They take a short break from their journey to visit the legendary Toledo Cathedral, which contains a work by El Greco (1541 - 1614); one of the precursors to modernist painting. 1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking’ will include a (Dutch) audio version of the first chapters of the novel. This is the first of four demos.

Grey Aura's first full-length album, 'Waerachtighe beschryvinghe van drie seylagien, ter werlt noyt soo vreemt ghehoort', an 80 minute double concept album dealing with Willem Barentsz' third (and final voyage), will be released by Blood Music in early 2015.

Grey Aura are now working on their (as of yet untitled) sophomore album. Conceptually, the album is based on ‘De protodood in zwarte haren’, a novel written by Ruben Wijlacker. The album deals with fictional early 20th century painter Pieter van der Laan, who becomes obsessed with suprematism; a Russian art movement, based on abstract, geometric forms. As the painter is gradually drawn into the world of abstraction, he begins to question the limits to the physical spaces around him; and ultimately life itself.

Their new release, titled 1: Gelige, traumatische zielsverrukking is a bit hard to translate to English, so I’ll just not bother. It’s been three years since the band dropped their full length and the complexity of this project seems to be even bigger than before. So let me try to ease you into this. Band member Ruben Wijlacker is writing a novel, which will be titled De Protodood in Zwarte Haren (The Proto-dead in Black Hair). This record is the first of four that will make up the full length to accompany this. This tune is pretty much the highlight of the album and shows Grey Aura on their best with a track that is just a bit of the beaten path, blending postrock-y atmosphere with black metal ferocity. But then we get to ‘El Greco in Toledo’, a tribute to the artist El Greco who is also in the long list of inspiring artists for this record.
