After nearly a year of delays, the incredible, debut full-length, "Wilt & Rise," by Cornwall, UK's Vales is finally being released. Recorded by Alex Estrada (Touche Amore, Joyce Manor), "Wilt & Rise" captures the spirit and sound of the "screamo" resurgence, while putting a unique twist on the sound unlike anyone else in the genre. Buried in the middle of this album is Katrina, an instrumental track that serves as the eye of a storm called Wilt & Rise. Vales has taken a cue or two from outfits such as Touche Amore and managed to combine beauty with brutality, restrained by tight rhythms. Edwards may steal most of the attention but it’s not for lack of trying from the rest of the band. They do a pretty bang up job on tracks like Scripted, the moody Branches and the intense closer that is Waterfalls. The only qualm that I have with Wilt & Rise is that Edwards’ voice becomes a bit monotonous after a couple of tracks.

For fans of their assured ‘Clarity’ EP, it was no surprise to see Vales plucked from the UK’s progressive hardcore pack by US label 6131 Records, former home of genre demi-gods Touché Amoré. Apprenticeship served, it’s a pleasure to hear the Cornish youngsters unleashed on a full-length, and ‘Wilt & Rise’ feels honed and visceral. The band masterfully segue quickfire brutality into bleak, wintry soundscapes, and anyone expecting Chlo Edwards to bring fragility to the often male-dominated anguish, is in for a shock.
