Most of César Franck's works seem to have been published during his lifetime, although only 21 works received a publisher's opus number. The mature published works were catalogued by Wilhelm Mohr in his Franck Werke Verzeichnis (FWV).
Опубликовано: 29 июн. 2016 г. César Franck - Psyché, Symphonic Poem for Chorus & Orchestra, M. 47, 1887-1888. Vincent d'Indy's portrait of Franck as the pater seraphicus of music - selfless, saintly, and wise - shepherding his small but influential band of disciples in the green pastures of noble idealism is surprisingly accurate as far as it goes, though it carefully bowdlerizes a recurrent undertow of barely suppressed sensuality. Marooned in an unhappy marriage and a career as church organist, Franck's intense inner life became apparent only at chance moments, and most fully in his music.
Franck described the subtext of the work as ‘the joy of the world, transformed and gladdened by the word of Christ’. It is built on two main thematic ideas, the first a gloriously noble tune that Emmanuel Chabrier described as ‘the very soul of music’, and the second an energetic peal from the trombones, with responses and modulations from the brass and woodwind. The two are developed and combined ingeniously. The Grand Organ (and massive acoustic) of St Paul’s Cathedral brings the symphonic organ works of César Franck to life, played by Simon Johnson, the current Organist of St Paul’s Cathedral. He plays his own transcription of Franck’s Symphony in D minor, a troublesome work which was despised by critics at its premiere.

Céllaume-Hubert Franck (December 10, 1822 – November 8, 1890), a composer, organist and music teacher of Belgian origin, was one of the great figures in classical music in France (and the world) in the second half of the 19th century. César Franck was born in Liège, Belgium. His father had ambitions for him to become a concert pianist, and he studied at the conservatoire in Liège before going to the Paris Conservatoire in 1837.
