Les Georges Leningrad formed in 1999 in Montreal. The members took turns at bass, keyboard, guitar, drums and vocals, sometimes using a drum machine. The band originally consisted of four members; they were reduced to a trio with the departure of bassist Toundra LaLouve after their first album was released In 2007 the band created the score for Asparagus: A Horticultural Ballet, which was performed at Conway Hall in London, England. On their sophomore release, SUR LES TRACES DE BLACK ESKIMO, avant-electro freaks Les Georges Leningrad maintain the inspired chaos that have made them Montreal's self-described "finest petro-chemical rock group. With a recipe that draws in equal parts on Flipper's fun, Lightning Bolt's frenetic energy, and Blectum from Blechdom's anything-goes electronica, the trio find the gutter punk swagger in digitalia like no other.

But like all of Les Georges Leningrad's giddy nonsense, a truth is concealed beneath the absurdity- they were a four piece on their debut, Deux Hot Dogs Moutarde Chou, but they've scaled back to three for this follow-up, which profits from the trimmer roster. While all their rasping aggression remains intact, it's more streamlined than on their occluded debut and the songs are more catchy and discernible. The story of the Black Eskimo ostensibly frames the record, but it seems like another red herring, another layer of preposterous juxtaposition. Ffor fans of post-punk that's challenging and artistically informed- but not self-important- Sur les Traces de Black Eskimo comes highly recommended. Just do yourself a favor, crank the bass on your equalizer down low before you give it a spin.
