Joel Chandler Harris. Uncle Remus' stories feature a trickster hero called Br'er Rabbit ("Brother" Rabbit), who uses his wits to slide out of trouble and gain the advantage over the slower witted other animals, many of whom are trying to eat him. Br'er Rabbit stories were mostly collected directly from the afro-american oral story-telling tradition and are said to be a direct interpretation of Yoruba tales of Hare. This book contains 11 unique stories and was the last one published before the author's death. Introduction by Phil Chenevert).
Br'er Rabbit /ˈbrɛər/ (Brother Rabbit), also spelled Bre'r Rabbit or Brer Rabbit, is a central figure as Uncle Remus tells stories of the Southern United States. Br'er Rabbit is a trickster who succeeds by his wits rather than by brawn, provoking authority figures and bending social mores as he sees fit. The Walt Disney Company later adapted this character for its 1946 animated motion picture Song of the South.

You can read Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit online at Project Gutenberg. Before reading, head on over to Librivox to listen to recordings of the Brer Rabbit stories. Phil Chenevert did a great job reading them! I like to open two tabs (or windows) on my computer and listen to the stories in one, while reading along in the other. It’s a great way to enjoy these tales! Mama Lisa.

Brer Rabbit (aka Bruh Rabbit Brother Rabbit) was born out of the slave trade, as Africans forcibly brought to the Americas brought with them stories of a trickster rabbit (Wakaima), who soon took on traits of similar tricksters from Native American tales (Encyclopedia Britannica’s Guide to Black History). Brer Rabbit tales were popularized among whites by the late nineteenth century writer Joel Chandler Harris as tales of Uncle Remus, The Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation.
