The Rakes were an English indie rock band formed in London in 2003. The band cited in their influences the Specials, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Pulp. The band split up in October 2009, after 6 years.

The Rakes were an indie rock band based in London, England. At the time of the band splitting in October 2009, the band line-up consisted of Alan Donohoe (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Matthew Swinnerton (lead guitar), Jamie Hornsmith (bass) and Lasse Petersen (drums). The Rakes' discography consisted of three studio albums, one EP and nine singles. The Rakes released their debut studio album, Capture/Release, in the UK in August 2005 on V2 Records.

The Rakes were a four piece indie rock band hailing from London. Releasing their debut album Capture/Release in 2005, The Rakes were the talk of the Reading and Leeds Festival after joining forces with Indie elites such as Bloc Party and Maxïmo Park in the NME Tent. They recently released their third album Klang which included the singles 1989 and That's the Reason.

The Rakes end up being uniquely middle-class: they're almost always witty and smart, but not as arch and arty as, say, Art Brut, and sometimes drunk and laddish, but not nearly to the extent that the Libertines were. What makes the band, and their debut album, Capture/Release, interesting is how the Rakes are less concerned with typical punk themes like smashing the system than they are with finding an identity - or at least some downtime - within the confines of a nine-to-five life

Spent the night in Friedrichshain Where the bars were full it was summertime Punks were hangin out in the park While someone practiced electric guitar We drank some homemade wine Now my heads not straight So I lean for a minute on a cemetery gate Half expecting to catch a sight Of the dead Russian soldiers marching into the night.
