Otherwise, the album tends to dole out its abundant hooks in less than conventional ways, favoring elaborate, multi-part song structures with extended instrumental interludes and transitions (starting from the absurdly grandiose glam guitar fanfare of the opening "Hot Tent Blues"), "ambient" breakdowns, and periodic tempo shifts (the intermittently irresistible mini-epic "Bathroom Gurgle" features at least four).

As their cult album Fantasy Black Channel gets a 10th anniversary reissue, the band and producer Erol Alkan reflect on its legacy. Late of the Pier were hardly a typical band, though.

Recorded at Late Of The Pier's Nottingham home studio and London's Miloko Studios, Fantasy Black Channel is a massively daring album in terms of scope and ambition.

Produced by superstar DJ-producer Erol Alkan, Fantasy Black Channel is huge in both scope and ambition, an exuberant rush of glam, psychedelia,nu-wave, dancepunk, metal and madcap sci-fi experimentation. Not every band can throw shards of Zappa, Queen, Eno-era Roxy Music, Prince, Gary Numan, DFA, Bloc Party and The Klaxons into a blender and come out with something as defiantly unique and grandly anthemic.

Although Late of the Pier are decidedly better than the Klaxons, without Myths Of The Near Future there would be no Fantasy Black Channel. In nearly every track, you can pick out influences from said album, whether it is the huge beats found on songs such as Space And The Woods and Gravity’s Rainbow respectively, or the use of bass centric riffs in many of the songs. This album is a mixed bag of brilliant, infectiously fun, hyperactive music and lazy monotony. At there best, this band really shine above and beyond any of their contemporaries, however they sometimes lack a sense of drive and focus. Despite its obvious flaws, Fantasy Black Channel is much more hit than miss, and offers a refreshing, unique take on today’s music scene.

The band's extraordinary, deeply individual approach placed their debut record in a league of its own, matching dazzling electronics, crazy time signatures, and incredible lyrics. Sadly, a follow up never arrived - a striking, cult phenomenon, Late Of The Pier birthed other solo projects, but sadly this would remain their sole full length. Fantasy Black Channel' turns 10 next year, so the group have arranged for a full 10th anniversary release.
