The xx. Released September 5, 2012. Shortcomings aside, you’ll find yourself enjoying Coexist and returning to it. It’s hard not to be disappointed given what came before, but the xx are still a special band, and time could possibly be kinder to their second LP as its place within a longer career comes into focus. For now, they’ve earned the right to make this record. Every band that creates a new world deserves a chance to return to it, to play around some more and see how much inspiration still exists. Asking for a third shot at it, on the other hand, is generally a harder sell.

The xx exist in a time and space of their own making. In 2009 the south London trio s debut album, xx, quietly made at night over the course of two years, bled steadily into the public consciousness to become shorthand for newly refined ideas of teenage desire and anxiety. Articulated with a maturity beyond their years, its hallmarks were restraint and ambiguity. Where xx lent in close to whisper in your ear, Coexist gazes warmly in your eyes. Above all, though, Coexist is an album of confident adult reflection. Angels, " sung by Romy, is a perfectly distilled love song. Its counter is "Fiction" led by Oliver, a bittersweet ballad that s strength lies in naming its fear. What has changed for The xx? Nothing, and everything.

Coexist presents a version of The xx that listeners will recognize, but cleans everything up a bit, subtly stretching and improving the formula that won acclaim. The album is a testament to what makes them great artists: the ability to take influences and mix in some of their own original thought to create that signature sound.

The xx’s last album might have become a dinner party favourite, but that doesn’t mean the band are dull, only that their music has quiet but universal appeal. The trio’s self-titled debut has become ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ for young Londoners – the record that everybody owns, and that gets played at that certain late point in the evening when friends become their most reflective. It’s a fantastic formula, and one that’s tinkered with only subtly on ‘Coexist’. This album has a loose narrative. It begins with a strikingly honest love song, ‘Angels’, on which Romy Madley-Croft repeats the line, ‘Being as in love with you as I am’, over a sprinkling of bass drum kicks and a few reverb-soaked guitar chords. On ‘Chained’ she’s singing, ‘We used to be closer than this.

Album · 2012 · 11 Songs. There's not a whisper of second album jitters on this follow-up from fearsomely singular childhood friends Jamie Smith, Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft. But-while opener Angel plays like an even leaner take on their signature witching hour sound-there’s discernible evolution in all those sonic spaces.
