Lee Perry and King Tubby collaborate on pioneering dub album with extraordinary split-stereo mixes that collides to make a brand new sound. 6. Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston. Peerless songs, breathtaking musicianship and, 40 years on, still box fresh. Jamaica’s failing economy in the ’70s meant recycling was a part of every day life, so it followed that, with studio time and recording tape expensive, producers like Lee Perry and King Tubby began taking old backing tracks and remixing them into sonically crackpot but undeniably brilliant ‘dubs’. Others, like U-Roy and Tapper Zukie, elected to rap over records, foreshadowing hip-hop.
The Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album is an award presented at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony that was established in 1985 and originally called the Gramophone Awards, to recording artists for quality works in the reggae music genre.
King Tubby was also instrumental in making the dub album a viable format for release, leading to the growing overseas popularity of the form during the mid-70s. Yet, the limited nature of Tubby’s recording equipment has stimulated much debate over the years. King Tubby’s life was cut tragically short on 6 February 1989, the victim of another senseless murder. The unidentified gunman took cash, jewellery, and most notably, Tubby’s licensed firearm, which was probably the reason he was targeted in the first place. Though Tubby’s murder struck a terrible blow for reggae, the music he made is truly immortal.
Complete your King Tubby collection. I will go out on a limb and say for me this is the best dub dub dub album for that totally echo chamber experience. This release was mixed by Fatman, who is a Tubb's disciple, here Fatman really sounded inspired, this does not sound like a "mix by numbers" dub album. The variety of dub/sound effects are always done tastefully within the mix. This apparantly was only released in the UK and I am not aware of any re-issues/JA presses. I got my hands on a CD version, it does the trick. In summary, if you find this album and like Dub, snatch it up!
Whittling King Tubby's prolific output down to a 15-track best-of that covers just four years of his career (1973-1977) ensures that the title The Best of King Tubby is a highly debatable proposition among serious reggae fans. Whether or not this is his best, or what most fans would choose as his best, it's a good collection of work from the period that most would agree represented his prime.
