Label: Six Degrees Records ‎– 65-2. This whole album is a lot of fun, but track 6, "Oya", has to be one of the most gorgeous deep house tracks I've ever heard. The bassline is relatively simple & catchy, most of the momentum comes from intricate, very latin percussion work.

Just as producer Bill Laswell and percussion master Zakir Hussain's collaborative Tabla Beat Science project set Indian tabla music into a sprawling electronic soundscape, Batidos - the brainchild of producer Ron Trent and Groove Collective saxophonist Jay Rodriguez - fuses simmering Latin grooves with pulsing house rhythms.

New York-based Batidos (milkshakes in Spanish) comprised Chicago-born DJ and producer Ron Trent and acid jazz Groove Collective's talented saxophonist, flute player, and clarinetist Jay Rodríguez. The experimental duo teamed up with Grammy winning Chucho Valdés and percussionist Eddie Bobe to make their debut record, Olajope, an experimental album featuring traditional Latin American rhythms, jazz, Afro-Cuban sounds, and electronica.

This whole album is a lot of fun, but track 6, "Oya", has to be one of the most gorgeous deep house tracks I've ever heard. Maybe even the best. The bassline is relatively simple & catchy, most of the momentum comes from intricate, very latin percussion work. The beauty of the track, however, comes from the juxtaposition of soaring strings & what can only be described as a playful flute melody. The result is a incredibly uplifting & lighthearted track guaranteed to make heads nod, feet tap, and hips sway. Every person I've played this track for smiles and says, "Wow!"
