Michelangeli presents the 10 Mazurkas found here slowly – as is typical of his performances – and in a somewhat stilted way. Things start well enough with a nice Op. 67/2, which displays Michelangeli wonderful technical command and his touch in articulating the lead melody. But Michelangeli breaks away from this detachment to give us a wonderful and engaging 1st Ballade op. 23 (track 12). Recently, I have been listening to a more recent Krystian Zimerman Chopin recital that I found uneven; coincidentally Zimerman delivers what I thought was easily the best performance in his set disc with the 1st Ballade. So this piece must inspire musicians. In the Ballade, Michelangeli emerges from his shell and plays with a sense of life and freedom that is welcome. I particularly found the Ballade’s momentum-filled final section terrific.
