The Papas & The Mamas is the fourth studio album by the American folk rock vocal group The Mamas and the Papas. Released in 1968, it was the final album together before the group temporarily broke up before a brief 1971 reunion. Unlike previous studio-recorded albums, The Papas & The Mamas was recorded at the home of John and Michelle Phillips, although with the same production team as on previous albums

The Mamas & The Papas were formed by husband and wife John and Michelle Phillips, formerly of The New Journeymen, and Denny Doherty, formerly of The Mugwumps. The last member to join was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandmate in The Mugwumps. The group considered calling itself The Magic Cyrcle before switching to The Mamas and the Papas as apparently inspired by the Hells Angels, whose female associates were called "mamas". The band's first single, "Go Where You Wanna Go", was released in 1965. The second single, "California Dreamin'", was released later in 1965 and quickly peaked in the charts. In 1966 they recorded their second album The Mamas And The Papas. I Saw Her Again" was the first single from the album before release. When the album was released in 1966, it peaked at number four in the US, continuing the band's success.

Then came the Beach Boys’ rendition, styled as ‘Wanna’ rather than ‘Want To’ and released in the US in February 1965, just ahead of their Today! album. It climbed to No. 12 and has the distinction of being the group’s most successful single with lead vocals by Dennis Wilson. Interpretations of ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ have kept on appearing with incredible regularity, in the 1980s by such names as Jan & Dean and Dave Edmunds; Peter Andre on his debut album in 1993, Swedish star Andreas Johnson in 2008, Juliana Hatfield in 2012, and so on. The dancefloor energy inspired by Bobby Freeman seems to be inexhaustible. The Mamas and the Papas’ version of ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ is on the album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, which can be bought here.
