Wolfgang Sawallisch's 1967 versions of Mendelssohn's five orchestral symphonies with the New Philharmonia are not poorly performed from a technical perspective, but they are terminally flaccid. The conductor and orchestra are too professional for that, but the interpretation and playing are conspicuously uninspired, with thick textures, dull colors, heavy rhythms, and turgid tempos, characteristics alien to Mendelssohn's music.
