Eddie Henderson (born October 26, 1940) is an American jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player. He came to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of pianist Herbie Hancock's band, going on to lead his own electric/fusion groups through the decade. Henderson earned his medical degree, and worked a parallel career as a psychiatrist and musician, turning back to acoustic jazz by the 1990s. Henderson's influences include Booker Little, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, and Miles Davis.
After initially pursuing jazz fusion early in his career, Eddie Henderson has been focused on bop. This 2009 session features the trumpeter/flügelhornist with guitarist John Scofield, bassist Doug Weiss, and drummer Billy Drummond

Henderson is back on muted trumpet for Al Foster's bittersweet ballad tribute "Missing Miles," with Scofield's soft guitar providing the perfect backdrop. The trumpeter's compositions, which include the tense bop vehicle "Sand Storm" and the playful "Popo," are matched by his wife Natsuko's infectious "Be Cool," the latter a splendid feature for the rhythm section. Tracklist: 1 - Jitterbug Waltz 2 - Be Cool 3 - For All We Know 4 - Sand Storm 5 - By Myself 6 - Cantaloupe Island 7 - Missing Miles 8 - Popo.
After being so impressed with Eddie Henderson's trumpet work on Billy Harper's 1990 album Destiny Is Yours, I wanted to hear him as a leader. Little did I know that he'd also played with Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Joe Henderson, Art Blakey, Kenny Barron and McCoy Tyner. The result of those experiences is strongly in evidence on Inspiration. While the influences of Miles and Freddie Hubbard are demonstrated, Henderson is definitely his own man and a master at that. The ensemble work is strong and swinging throughout.

Henderson explores several timeless compositions, conjuring a bit of Miles Davis as he plays muted trumpet in a lively workout of "Jitterbug Waltz," switching to flügelhorn for a richly textured interpretation of "For All We Know" and an extra funky setting of "Cantaloupe Island," while taking the standard "By Myself" into new territory with an abstract treatment. Henderson is back on muted trumpet for Al Foster's bittersweet ballad tribute "Missing Miles," with Scofield's soft guitar providing the perfect backdrop.
