Other recordings of the Paganini Caprices that deserve honorable mention include Markov, Mintz, Kaler, Gitils, Kogan, Heifetz (the early years before 1920), and Milstein's meticulously articulated variations of the 24th caprice titled "Paganiniana". What a great loss for the musical world became the early death of Michael Rabin. His reading of this Op. 1 from Paganini is overwheelming. Absolutely elocuent and passionate vibrato, Rabin convinces us that he belonged to this selected group of musicians (such as Casals, Kempff, Vegh and Edwin Fisher and Ginette Neveu, among others)who had aview who followed his bliss in his interpretations. With the early death of Neveu in 1949 and Rabin in 1957, the world of violin still is orphan.
Separately, Paganini's Caprices (24) are among the most difficult pieces ever written for the violin. Together, they are the very definition of violin virtuosity. And not just technical virtuosity, but tonal and even emotional virtuosity. Playing the notes perfectly is the beginning - not the end - of performing the Caprices: playing the notes with exquisite beauty and emotional expressivity is the goal of performing the Caprices. Michael Rabin can do all of that and he makes it sound easy.
