Evan Parker, Philipp Wachsmann, Aki Takase, Rudi Mahall, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Paul Rutherford, Paul Lovens. September 2 2007, 1:00am, The Sunday Times. The Appleby Jazz Festival offers the folk of Westmorland a night of improvised jazz tag teams, under the direction of the saxophonist Evan Parker. Last year's event began by pitching Parker's piping sax against the sinewy piano of his long-term collaborator Alexander von Schlippenbach for a gloriously sporadic opener. By the end of this record of the evening, 10 combinations of the seven players have been explored

Paul Lovens played the drums as a child n groups of various jazz styles and popular musics and from 1969 has worked almost exclusively as an improvisor on individually selected instruments. He has worked internationally with most of the leading musicians in free jazz and free improvisation, among whom have included the Globe Unity Orchestra, the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, the Schlippenbach trio, Quintet Moderne, Company, and a duo with Paul Lytton. 2003, Plays Fats Waller, Enja CD 9152. 2003, These six, SOFA 512.
