However, the Decca audition tapes did prove fortunate for The Beatles. Had they signed to Decca, their career may never have involved Ringo Starr, who joined the group only after George Martin expressed concerns about Pete Best's drumming. Furthermore, the audition gave Epstein some good-quality recordings of the group, on reel-to-reel, enabling him to take them around the remaining London labels. Pete Best was involved in the release of a Silver Beatles album (on Backstreet Records) which also contained the Decca recordings. There’s something about the Decca sessions that always puzzled me until recently. I wondered for years (decades, actually) why the group would go and do a serious audition like this on a holiday?

Sessions was a compilation album by the Beatles planned for release by EMI in 1984 but never issued due to objections by the surviving Beatles. The album consisted of thirteen finished but unreleased Beatles songs. A planned single containing two of the tracks from Sessions – "Leave My Kitten Alone", backed with an alternative version of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" – was also left unissued. The idea was resurrected in 1995 as The Beatles Anthology.

THE BEATLES The Complete Silver Beatles - 1982 UK mono vinyl LP featuring recordings from the band's audition session for Decca Records on January 1st 1962 with Pete Best on drums, AFELP1047. Take Good Care Of My Baby.

Randolph Peter Best (born Randolph Peter Scanland; 24 November 1941) is an English musician, songwriter, and civil servant. He is best known as an original member and the first drummer of the Beatles. After he was dismissed from the group in 1962, he started his own band, The Pete Best Four, and would later join many other bands over the years. He is one of several people who have been referred to as the Fifth Beatle.

The Beatles were rejected after auditioning for Decca Records on Jan. 1, 1962. For years, Best had said he was fired in favor of Ringo Starr because the band were jealous of his success with their female fans. But after one listen, it's obvious that Best was a limited drummer with a poor sense of timekeeping. The Beatles' oral history Anthology finds McCartney and Lennon reflecting upon the Decca audition in hindsight. Listening to the tapes I can understand why we failed the Decca audition," said McCartney. We weren't that good, though there were some quite interesting and original things.

lost classics Nov. 14, 2016. The 15 Best Unreleased Beatles Songs That You Can Listen to Now. By David Marchese. 8. Love of the Loved (1962) Cut as part of an audition for Decca records (which infamously passed on signing the band), here’s a brisk and moody tune sung by Paul - with a nice jittery guitar tag - that one could imagine having really soared in the hands of Roy Orbison or Elvis. Consider it a companion to Lennon’s tweak of born-again Bob Dylan on the song Serve Yourself. This strutting piece of romantic defiance features Pete Best rather than Ringo on drums. 13.
