The Captain's daughter accompanies Theon Greyjoy aboard the Myraham to Pyke. Aboard the Myraham, a ship taking him to Pyke, Theon Greyjoy descends to the Captain's cabin which he has taken for his own. The Captain's daughter waits in his bed, naked. She asks him if the castle is as he remembered and he says that it looks smaller. She says that everything looks bigger to a child. Theon undresses and tells her that he expects a warm reception from the ironborn when they reach the docks
The Captain’s Daughter is one of the stories in which Pushkin created Russian prose. Robert Conquest, The Spectator Pushkin’s greatest stories include the famous supernatural tale ‘The Queen of Spades’ and the thrilling historical novel about the Pugachev rebellion, The Captain’s Daughter. Everyone should read these. Michael Dirda, The Washington Post. Pyotr is assigned as a young army officer to an inadequately defended fort in the rebel area. The fort is attacked and falls to Pugachov. The commander of the fort, the Captain of the story title, is amongst those immediately executed by Pugachov.
The captain’s family is nice and loving as if Pushkin wanted to put forward a part of the society which usually remained behind the curtains. For me, this novel is to the Russian literature I’ve read what Ladies’ Paradise is to Zola’s work: a unique piece without darkness, with hope and good people. I probably would have made more of it if I knew better about Russian literature.
