Fernando Germani had a distinguished career as one of Europe's leading organists and teachers. These 1959-1960 recordings are in monophonic sound, but the sonics are clear, full of body and presence, and the performances are outstanding. Some aspects of Germani's playing, such as a tendency to foursquare rhythm and narrow dynamics, will seem dated to fans of today's light, speedy style, but overall, his forward-moving interpretations, emphasizing articulation and clarity of contrapuntal lines, are timeless. The more modest, short Sweelinck and Bull pieces are played on the church's small organ, and they're lovely works not often heard these days. The big Bach Preludes and Fugues (BWV 541, 543, 544, and 547) are given emotionally satisfying readings that never lapse into heaviness, while the shorter pieces are done to perfection.
Fernando Germani at St. Laurens Alkmaar. I have always enjoyed Fernando Germani's recitals. He was a brilliant virtuoso player, producing several LPs. I have enjoyed, particularly, his historic recordings, at Selby Abbey, Yorkshire, where he played works by Franck, Reger and Liszt. I would thoroughly recommend this recording, with his flawless playing, to anyone interested in classical organ music. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: New.

Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he did not introduce new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France.

Bach: Prelude in D Minor/Suite in E Minor. Unfortunately the better the stereo the more pronounced the issue. That being said this album has great music on it and the performance of Bream is superb. 9 people found this helpful.
