THE SLUDGELORD , the title track, "Wingmakers", is perhaps one of the best tracks on the album as I can't really help myself from tapping my foot to the rhythm of the highly infectious riff. As the lyric "Trapped in eternity, no sign of light, a floating entity, drawn away to the other side" enters, I must admit I'm sold to this simple blend of semi-psychedelic imagery of the lyrics and the powerful riff that sounds like something straight out of the 70's - due in no small part to producer Tony Reed's.

Really is the second album by J. J. Cale. It was released in 1973. After several years in California working as an engineer in Leon Russell’s studio, Cale returned home to Oklahoma gigging in obscurity when Eric Clapton recorded the arrangement of After Midnight that Cale had released as a B-side to an obscure Liberty single in 1966. The song became a hit in 1970 and put Cale on the map as a songwriter.

If I’ve learned anything from the Metallicas and Carcasses of the world, it’s to leave ’em wanting more. The direction, the track, the album as a whole present a disappointing buffet of side dishes and never includes the meat to weigh down the plate. Fuzzy riff-centricity; echoed vox; southern stylings; all the ingredients are present. But the degree of simplicity is ramped up by a factor of ten, leaving the riffs impotent and excising the energy that made Windmakers so enticing.
