Manolo Caracol's voice was like a geyser that surges from deep in the primordial sediment and erupts with glorious force, cascading in slowly dissolving sustains. In 1922, at the age of thirteen, Caracol won a highly publicized cante jondo (deep song) contest in Granada that was organized by the poet Federico Garcia Lorca. This instant fame launched a long and successful career in Spain and throughout South America. Deeply rooted in Gypsy traditions, he gave his emotions full rein to express both suffering and joy and entranced his audiences in the process.
