Countryman is the fifty-third studio album by Willie Nelson. Ten years in the making since 1995, Nelson's first ever reggae album merges the gospel and spirit found in both country and reggae. It was released on CD format on August 2, 2005 by the Lost Highway label. Nelson made two videos for this album "The Harder They Come" and "I'm a Worried Man" both videos were filmed in Jamaica. Begun a decade ago with super-producer Don Was, Willie Nelson’s country-reggae fusion album was originally intended for Island Records (the label that made its name with Bob Marley). When Island folded into Universal, the album lost its allies until a former Island executive landed at Nelson’s current label. Unfortunately, the story behind Countryman is better than its music: With the exception of a folky rendition of the Jimmy Cliff classic The Harder They Come, Nelson’s vocals sound like they’re in a different world than these slick, overly tinkered-with instrumental tracks

A Willie Nelson reggae album is an idea that's almost as crazy-brilliant as casting the Red-Headed Stranger as Uncle Jesse in the Dukes of Hazzard movie. For starters, both country and reggae build on outlaw imagery and class issues, making heroes of rebels and outsiders, and the sunny island rhythms have the potential to counterbalance the dark gospel sobriety of many of Nelson's songs  . Now Nelson's new label, Lost Highway Records, is finally showing it the light of day.

The idea of combining Willie Nelson's patented Texas glide with some one-drop Jamaican rhythms is certainly a novel one, but the chances of it working seemed as remote as George Jones hitting Kingston and toasting "White Lightning" over a choice dubplate at the local yard. You'd have to be crazy or high to think it would work.
