Parachute, released in 1970, is the fifth studio album by the English rock band The Pretty Things, following . Sorrow and preceding Freeway Madness. It is their first album without guitarist Dick Taylor.
The circumstances surrounding The Songs of Tony Sly: A Tribute are nothing if not wholly unique . His music inspired so many people from so many different sections of punk, the expectations for this record are almost impossibly high, to the point where it'd be unfair to judge its content in the context of a "traditional" tribute album. Still, as a tribute, The Songs of Tony Sly: A Tribute is a pretty fitting, and often arresting eulogy on behalf of a still-mourning scene.
Few artists deserve tribute more than Johnny Cash, and none pose a greater challenge to those who would offer their homage. The problem is that his sound has been pounded so deep into America's soul that it's almost impossible to play his music without lapsing into imitation - and those who try to avoid that trap can sound a little misguided. Some do a pretty good job of evoking Cash, especially James Intveld, whose rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues" comes darn close to the original, and Chuck Mead on "There You G.
Only for completionists (5%). By no means essential, but I'd recommend this to open minded fans. Tribute albums to great bands, always so difficult to judge, if the covers are too close to the originals they are meaningless, but when the homaged material are true classics and they try to make different versions it's often so difficult to come up with better renditions than the originals.
ABBAMania: Tribute to ABBA.
The Pretty Things seemed determined to avoid success at all costs. But they did one thing most of their 60s peers couldn't, writes Alexis Petridis: break away from R&B to make a psychedelic masterpiece. In 1969, the Pretty Things performed their recently released album SF Sorrow in its entirety live. Or rather they didn't: unable to work out how to reproduce its complex patchwork of sounds on stage, they opted to mime to backing tapes. Miming an entire gig would probably have spelled disaster anyway, even had the whole band – and, crucially, their soundman – not opted to take LSD before the performance. The ensuing debacle is recalled on the DVD accompanying this deluxe reissue.
