Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini studied organ, piano and composition with Riccardo Nielsen at the Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna and at the Conservatory in Paris with Marcel Dupré. Together with Marie-Claire Alain, Anton Heiller and Gustav Leonhardt, he made a considerable contribution to the rediscovery and promotion of historical performance practice on the Baroque organ and also the harpsichord. Some of the restorations guided by the movement, in particular those of the two organs in the Basilica San Petronio in Bologna, one (1471–75) by Lorenzo da Prato and (1531) Giovan Battista Fachinetti, and the other (1596) by Baldassarre Malamini, have contributed to a new awareness of historical organs in Italy and a new consciousness of their extraordinary value. 1996 – Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini and his collection of harpsichords (Ermitage).

Sonate 15 I. - II. - III. Sonate 8 In Die Beati Aloisii I. - I. Bernardo Pasquini - Marie Claire Alain, Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini - 15 Sonatas For Two Organs, Two Harpsichords ‎(LP).

Sonate 15. B1. Sonate 8 In Die Beati Aloisii.

Pasquini wrote two sets of fourteen sonatas each, for one and two keyboards respectively. Instead of writing them out he provided only basso continuo lines which have to be worked out during performance. The sonatas for two keyboards have been recorded before by Attilio Cremonesi and Alessandro de Marchi (Symphonia, 1992); I am not aware of any recording of the sonatas for one keyboard. The fact that the players have to work out the bassi continui themselves obviously results in varying performances. Cremonesi and De Marchi played two harpsichords; Scandali and Jourdain play most of the sonatas at two large organs from the 18th century. Many Italian churches of that time had two organs at the opposing sides of the choir: one on the 'epistle side', and therefore called the 'Epistle organ', and one at the 'gospel side' - the 'Gospel organ'.

Together with Oscar Mischiati, his colleague and friend, was, after Renato Lunelli, the second exponent of Orgelbewegung in Italy, a movement that is being pursued the restoration and enhancement of ancient organs according to historical criteria. Among the most successful concert organist of his generation, he has played in the most important Italian and European organs and is still engaged in the concert.
