This album is pretentious, that basically sums up my thoughts about the album. It's an album that tries so desperately to be something that it's not that the whole music comes off as unfortunately pathetic and carrying with it an inflated ego. Watching from a Distance is an album that came about at the right time. The music in itself is nothing worth noting, it's bland, unimaginative and dry yet for some reason people can't get enough of it. It's something that will always astound me no matter how many listens I give it to try and immerse myself in the experience. Watching from a Distance tries to come across as painfully earnest and inspired, yet the sheer desperation of it all causes the music to completely annihilate itself. The music is just so sad that it goes completely past the point of being tastefully atmospheric and emotional to devolve into realms of whining self pity and teenage angst.

Robert Hiltzik (born c. 1957) is known for being the director of the 1983 summer camp slasher film Sleepaway Camp, which garnered a cult following. Highly recommended for those who like synthy new age that DOESNT follow the atypical formula. Very melodic, textural and well composed music with no vocals, piano or guitars. You can obviously hear the jazz influence in the use of minor 7th/9th chord structures which notches this release above the rest. The music is ambient but not drone like in nature with a very melodic hook in many of the compositions and incredibly textural utilizing what I am guessing are various then new digital and hybrid analog synthesizers. I know for a fact one of the two musicians here wrote for the US based Keyboard Magazine a staple in this writers past curio readings so they had the insiders guide to the new tech they where composing with.A unique lost electronic music gem that does not tip its hat to traditional Euro-centric style of electronica made popular by Tangerine Dream, Schulze and the rest of the league of pioneers spanning the Atlantic!
