Collapse is an extended play by British electronic musician Richard D. James under the pseudonym Aphex Twin. It was released on 14 September 2018 on Warp. The extended play received universal acclaim from music critics, who praised James for returning to his signature "Aphex Twin" sound. Over the last week, Aphex Twin has been teasing something with mysterious advertisements and billboards placed in select cities around the world. Today, Richard D. James has officially announced the Collapse EP, which will be out 9/14 on Warp Records. It’s five tracks long, and the first one that he’s sharing is the quasi-title track, T69 Collapse. It comes attached to a glitchy visual directed by Weirdcore, which was originally set to premiere on Adult Swim last night but was pulled at the last minute because it failed the epilepsy test. It’s alright for YouTube, though, and you can watch.

For the not in-numerous points of lethargy and creative constraint on ‘Syro’, this new EP immediately dispels fears of a repeat with its title track, T69 Collapse, a song that embodies concision. Airtight with soft piano riffs and thick, playful bass lines, the song’s opening comes nowhere near its sell-by date before being thrown into a breakneck, grandiose decay towards fibre-optic oblivion. When the track’s warmer elements are refreshingly re-introduced as a dreamy closer, it’s with only a fraction of its previous turbulence

Collapse’ is Aphex Twin at, arguably, his most interesting – as a mutating electronic mastermind, his work at once intricate and immediate. Perhaps it’s those aforementioned Soundcloud dumps clouding the timeline, but it also feels like his most essential release in years. Of course, Aphex Twin isn’t one to settle into the slow pace of a conventional dancefloor filler. 1st 44’ is less elastic and more full-on Flubber, impossible to discern as it warps around an almost ’80s new wave melodic backbone, while ‘MT1 t29r2’ brings back the rickety beatwork of the record’s opener, this time fusing it with bells and acidic melody – to highly hypnotic effect. The overriding feeling of ‘Collapse’ comes from the parts that – perhaps more than ever before – sound written for the footwork-packed dancefloors of modern clubs.
