Polonaise, Double (In B minor. Metrical sign for both is 3 4); the flute part is marked "Moderato e staccato" and the first violin part "lentement" (slowly).
On those terms, this recording is a complete success. One could point to any number of musical felicities - the Christe eleison soprano duet featuring Dorothee Mields and Johannette Zomer, the Et in Spiritum Sanctum bass and bassoon aria featuring Peter Harvey and Benny Aghassi, the Agnus Dei alto aria featuring Matthew White - but the crucial element is the palpable sense of community that infuses this performance. The musicians of the Netherlands Bach Society really listen to each other, react to each other, and appreciate each other, and together they create a performance greater than the sum of its parts.
The listing shows recordings of the Mass in B minor, BWV 232, by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Mass in B minor discography. The listing shows recordings of the Mass in B minor, BWV 232, by Johann Sebastian Bach. The selection is taken from the 237 recordings listed on bach-cantatas as of 2015, beginning with the first recording by a symphony orchestra and choir to match, conducted by Albert Coates. The first complete recording of the work was conducted by Albert Coates in 1929. Robert Shaw led the first American recording in 1947. Some recordings are documents of live concerts, such as a 1968 performance conducted by Karl Richter at the Moscow Conservatory Grand Hall. Royal Choral Society. London Symphony Orchestra. Retrieved 12 October 2013.
Leonard Bernstein: Wagner – Tristan und Isolde. Leonard Bernstein's half-staged interpretation of "Tristan und Isolde" with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has long been regarded as a reference recording. And thus, in Jansons’s recording of the Ninth Symphony, the choral finale does not degenerate to mere superficial orgy of jubilation, but rather becomes a delicately balanced, wisely developed drama. On October 27, 2007, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks played Beethoven’s Ninth in the presence of the Pope in the Vatican. Two Russian Symphonies, both labeled with number six, both in B minor - but nevertheless the symphonies of Peter Tschaikowsky and Dmitrij Schostakowitsch couldn't be more different.
