The American Interior project has spawned an album, but also a book, a film and an app, produced by the company he set up with his partner Catryn Ramasut to make previous film Separado in 2010. EP1 is also pressed on heavyweight vinyl, comes in a thick card picture sleeve. The LP and the 12" EP both have plain white inner sleeves. The CD comes in a plain PVC cover. An exclusice 12" x 12" Pete Fowler art print is included, which is autographed by Gruff Rhys. Everything is housed in a black box with American Interior laminated on all four outside edges. Inside the lid of the box is the word "Interior". The bottom of the box contains further artwork of Gruff Rhys.

American Interior captures Rhys' own attempt to retrace the footsteps of explorer John Evans, who set out in the 1790s to find the lost Welsh-speaking tribe. Evans didn't find the tribe and for Rhys the journey itself is the destination, a journey he chronicled in a film, in a book, and in this concept album. As a record, American Interior hits a sweet spot between his lush art rock with SFA and his arch conceptual works released under the Neon Neon moniker.
