Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded "Free Bird" in 1973 and it featured on their debut album "(Pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)". Released as a single in November 1974, "Free Bird" became the band's second Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1975, where it peaked at No. 19. The version of this song without the faded ending was included on the band's "Skynyrd's Innyrds: Their Greatest Hits" album in 1989. A live version of this track re-entered the charts in late 1976 and peaked at number 38 in January 1977. Guitar World put this song at number 3 on its list of 100 Greatest Guitar Solos. Lynyrd Skynyrd usually end their live shows with this song, which can go over 14 minutes.
