The Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World", Op. 95, B. 178 (Czech: Symfonie č. 9 e moll „Z nového světa ), popularly known as the New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It is by far his most popular symphony, and one of the most popular of all symphonies.
Dvorak: The Symphonies.
Antonín Dvořák stands alongside Smetana as a founder of the new Czech music. His nine symphonies show Dvořák to be a thoroughly individual and original composer whose symphonic concepts and wealth of musical expression are often surprising. All the symphonies in this cycle were performed in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague, one of Europe’s oldest and loveliest concert halls. Jiří Bělohlávek visits important places in the composer’s life, interviews experts and key figures
Antonín Dvořák in 1868. Liehmann also taught the young boy music theory and introduced him to the composers of the time; Dvořák had much regard for Liehmann despite his teacher's violent temper. In 1871 Dvořák left the Provisional Theatre orchestra to have more time for composing. Up through 1871 Dvořák only gave opus numbers up to 5 among his first 26 compositions. The first press mention of Antonín Dvořák appeared in the Hudební listy journal in June 1871, and the first publicly performed composition was the song Vzpomínání ("Reminiscence", October 1871
