Harold Franklin Hawkins (December 22, 1921 – March 5, 1963), better known as Hawkshaw Hawkins, was an American country music singer popular from the 1950s into the early 1960s known for his rich, smooth vocals and music drawn from blues, boogie and honky tonk. At 6 ft 5 inches tall, he had an imposing stage presence, and he dressed more conservatively than some other male country singers.

If you listen to Cowboy Copas’ and Hawkshaw Hawkins’ music today, it sounds like it was recorded in the ’60s, observed Bill Kee. You listen to Patsy Cline music, with the orchestration and the background vocals, and it could have been recorded in Nashville yesterday. Owen stood up to her, Howard added. He was a genius as a producer and as a musician. He’d go in and sit down at the piano, and he and the musicians did the arrangements most of the time. It was a combination of a great producer and a great artist with a great voice.
Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins fared less well, their names quietly slipping from public memory and their recordings haphazardly reissued. Although both recorded prolifically, Copas arguably left a more enduring legacy. Copas shined in the studio, imparting his distinctive personality and style onto whatever material he chose or was handed. By contrast, the mercurial Hawkins gave his best performances on stage. Whether conscious or not, this ability initially worked in Hawkins's favor. Syd Nathan likely signed him to King Records to cover material by other artists, especially Ernest Tubb. For his Saturday night broadcasts on the WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia, the singer could duplicate the week's jukebox hits with sincerity and precision. Hawkins was an unquestionably gifted vocalist with a natural affinity for blues-based material.
