You'd probably have to be in the audience of this live show to appreciate Kaapana's trademarked slack key tricks of playing guitar with one hand in a paper bag or fretting with his forearm. Despite a bit of high-profile tomfoolery, though, this disc still comes off as the most personable of the Dancing Cat label's Slack Key Masters series and a great introduction to the genre that heaps in everything from a Hawaiian-bred "Turkey in the Straw" ("Glass Ball Slack Key") to a string-searing version of Sonny Chillingworth's "Whee Ha Swing," plus.

Ledward Kaapana is a Hawaiian musician, best known for playing in the slack key guitar style. He also plays steel guitar, ukulele, autoharp and bass guitar, and is a renowned falsetto singer. Led grew up in a musical family living in a small black sand bay village of Kalapana where he states there were little distractions. We didn't have electricity, not television, not even much radio, so we entertained ourselves.

Notes

The song "I Kona" in Track 15 is followed by audience applause; the last four seconds of this applause, with a comment by Mr. Kaapana and subsequent audience laughter, is "separated" into a Track 16. Track 16 is not listed anywhere in the printed materials or on the CD label.

"Led Live - Solo" is Ledward Kaapana's first of five albums that he recorded on George Winston's Dancing Cat label. Many of the tracks are from his performance at the Bluebird in Nashville. The subsequent Dancing Cat albums are "Waltz of the Wind" (also recorded in Nashville and in partnership with some of Nashville's best musicians), "Black Sand," and with Bob Brozman "Kika Kila Meets Ki Hoalu" and "In the Saddle." Led's first recordings were in the 1970's with his twin brother Nedward and his cousin Dennis Pavao as Hui Ohana with ten albums plus two "best of" albums. Hui Ohana also backed Led and Ned's mother Regina "Mama Tina" Kaapana on her two solo albums. In the 1980's. Led formed the group I Kona with Alika Odom on rhythm guitar and Bernard Kalua (and later Ryan Tang) on bass. "Lima Wela" in 1984 was the first of his many solo albums, that were also part of Dancing Cat releases and later Milton Lau's Rhythm&Roots label. Ken Levine produced Led's two most recent releases, the CD "Force of Nature" partnering in concert with Mike Kaawa and the concert DVD with Mike Kaawa, Dennis Kamakahi, and Nathan Aweau. Led's showmanship matches his musical genius. If he is performing in your area, don't miss him.
