The subtitle for Rhapsody in Ragtime covers it all: "Ragtime, novelty, stride, and jazz piano solos. Richard Dowling picks not only the familiar - The Entertainer, 12th Street Rag, Ain't Misbehavin' - but also the neglected (Gershwin's Rialto Ripples) and the unknown (a piano version of Grofé's Three Shades of Blue). He begins with a couple of Scott Joplin rags and Fats Waller's Handful of Keys, and in keeping with a ragtime tradition of improvisation - or at least embellishment - Dowling adds his own touch to the music

Rhapsody in Blue is a 1924 musical composition by the American composer George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. The composition was commissioned by the bandleader Paul Whiteman. It was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé several times, including the original 1924 scoring, the 1926 "theater orchestra" setting, and the 1942 symphony orchestra scoring, though completed earlier
Ragtime - A genre of musical composition for the piano, generally in duple meter and containing a highly syncopated treble lead over a rhythmically steady bass. A ragtime composition is usually composed three or four contrasting sections or strains, each one being 16 or 32 measures in length. This definition describes much of the music of the itinerant pianists who traversed the South and Midwest and eventually congregated in Missouri to produce an oeuvre of core ragtime compositions. However, it seems to have been supplanted by the novelty piano style that was ironically based on many of the traits found in ragtime-traits that had become anachronistic by 1920. Novelty and Stride Piano. The technical demands of playing the works of Joplin, et a. are not inconsiderable. Their music demanded technique as a means to expression.
